Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Vaar: what each of the five limbs of the Panchang tells you.

Panchang means 'five limbs': Tithi (lunar day), Vaar (weekday), Nakshatra (the star the Moon is passing), Yoga (Sun-Moon angular combination) and Karana (half a Tithi). Together they describe the quality of a moment.

Start with the Tithi and its end time. Tithis 4, 9 and 14 (Rikta) are traditionally avoided for new beginnings, while 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12 and 13 are generally supportive.

Next check the Nakshatra for your purpose: for example Rohini, Uttara Phalguni and Revati are widely used for auspicious work. Finally, avoid Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal for starting something new.

Panchang values change with your location because sunrise and moonrise differ from city to city, so always choose your city on the Panchang page.
